What are SAT tax regimes in Mexico, and what are they?
A tax regime is a set of laws and rules that govern the tax situation of individuals and legal entities when they register with the Servicio de Administración Tributaria (SAT). Mexico's SAT administers a wide range of tax regimes, each with different rights and obligations depending on the economic activity carried out (the work that person or company does) and the type of taxpayer, whether an individual or a legal entity. Understanding these regimes is important, since it determines the tax obligations you must meet (and therefore, which taxes you must pay). Below, we present the 11 types of SAT tax regimes in Mexico.

1. General Regime:
This is the most common regime and applies to legal entities, such as companies and business corporations. Taxpayers under this regime must keep accurate accounting records and file periodic tax returns. The key taxes are Income Tax (ISR) and Value Added Tax (IVA).
2. Small Taxpayers Regime (Repecos):
Designed for microbusinesses and small businesses, this regime offers tax simplifications, such as fixed tax rates and fewer accounting obligations, making it easier to meet tax obligations.
3. Tax Incorporation Regime (RIF):
Aimed at entrepreneurs and small business owners starting economic activities. It offers benefits such as a preferential tax rate during the first years of operation and simplified accounting requirements.
4. Salaries and Wages Regime:
Applies to individuals who earn income from salaries, wages, and similar income. These taxpayers must file an annual return to calculate and pay the corresponding ISR.
5. Agricultural, Livestock, Forestry, and Fishing Activities Regime:
Aimed at individuals and legal entities involved in agricultural, forestry, and fishing activities. It offers specific tax benefits for this sector.
6. Non-Profit Legal Entities Regime:
Applies to non-profit organizations, such as civil associations and foundations. These entities must meet specific requirements to maintain their tax-exempt status.
7. Individuals with Business and Professional Activities Regime:
For individuals who carry out business or professional activities independently. Taxpayers are subject to ISR and IVA, as applicable.
8. Intermediation Regime:
Applies to financial intermediaries, such as brokerage firms and investment companies. These taxpayers must meet specific requirements and regulations related to their financial operations.
9. Tax Consolidation Regime:
Applicable to groups of companies that choose to consolidate their tax results to calculate ISR jointly, which can result in significant tax savings.
10. Sale of Goods Regime:
Aimed at individuals and legal entities that sell goods, whether regularly or occasionally. Taxpayers are subject to ISR and IVA on these transactions.
11. Hydrocarbons Regime:
Designed for companies involved in the exploration, extraction, production, refining, and marketing of hydrocarbons. Given the nature of this industry, it's governed by specialized regulations.
Choosing the right tax regime is a crucial step in optimizing your financial situation and effectively meeting your tax obligations. Each regime has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice will depend on factors such as the type of economic activity, the size of the business, and other individual elements. Tax or legal advice is essential to make informed decisions and successfully meet your tax obligations in Mexico.
